From
the 5th District Commander

03 December 2007

I hope everyone is enjoying the
holiday season. As you all
know Warren Post, Department of Florida Commander will be visiting the
5th District on the 6th and departing on the 9th of
December. We have a busy
agenda for Commander Post and trust he will enjoy the visit.
On behalf of the 5th
District Staff, I would like to extend my sincere hopes that you and your
families will be safe and enjoy the holidays.
Bless the Legion Family
Sean Compton
Commander

I
have at last found time to update this newsletter. So what has been going
on since the 22 of July? We have finished most of our installations and
helped with a problem for Post 37.
I had some temporary financial
assistance claims to process and a job fair. The job fair was a great
success because of the assistance of our Department Sgt-At-Arms John
Burroughs, District and Area membership chairman Bob Brewster, our
District Unit President Sylvia Curnutte and Chaplain Cheryl LaBarge. Funny
how we always had a few people stop at our booth, but add two lovely
Ladies and we are overrun with guys. Let this be a lesson learned that
when the Auxiliary and Sal work together things are so much better. John
Burroughs saw an ad for another big veterans job fair on Wednesday, 19
September 07 and we are going to work that one too. Vice Commander Lovejoy
has been putting the Auxiliary web site together and keeping me out of
trouble. Our District Judge Advocate Joe Tarr has been down after a back
surgery so please keep him in your prayers. Your Adjutant Fred Bergman
just calmly says, "Sean, I don’t think you want to do that."
Membership
I would like to congratulate Posts
54, 202, for being at their 50% membership goal first. Posts 316, 137,
233, 244, 88, and 129 are at 40% plus and almost there.
I thank you for your hard work and drive.
Now 5th District is in
last place in Northern area, but I am not worried yet. We started out in
last place last year and you came in first in our category. Vice Commander
Brewster on the other hand is screaming and pulling his hair out. His wife
asked me to tell you she does not want a bald husband. Could you please
try and help him out? I am sure you will answer her plea. As you work on
your renewals please don’t neglect the DMS. This is like free members
and all it takes is a post card or letter. Sometimes all you have to do is
ask someone to join you.
Our
first District meeting is Sunday, 12 August at Post 316 Atlantic Beach at
2 pm. Lets start the year off right with a full house. I would like to
thank all my Officers and Chairman for joining me this year to serve all
of you in the 5th District.
I invite you to sing happy birthday
to Vice Commander Brewster who is going to be really old on the 28th
of August.
For God and Country,
Sean.

I
have just finished leadership training for Area and District Commanders at
Department of Florida. Our Department Commander for 2007-08 is Warren
Post. I can tell you he’s a hard charger and hands on type leader.
Membership is one of his focuses for the year. This includes DMS,
retaining your present members, transferring 400 members and recruiting
new members. Our Northern Area Commander is Phil Hearlson he is an
experienced Commander who knows what the problems are at Post and District
level. He will know who’s performing and who’s not.
I
hope to soon have our 5th District Auxiliary Unit share and
post their information with us on this web site. Your 5th
District Auxiliary President is Sylvia Curnutte. I know we’re going to
enjoy this year with her leadership and the great group of officers and
chairmen she has brought together.
As
the year goes on I will post good to know information on this 5th
District Commanders News Letter updating it as needed. I urge you to
support your 5th District this year by coming to district
meetings. We can learn from
one and another. Bob Brewster sat me down and showed me that the most
successful Posts were the ones that attended District meetings.
So help yourself, your post, and the American Legion by learning
and sharing the many great successful ideas and projects that meeting with
other posts and members can generate. And be assured that my officers,
chairmen, and myself are here to work for you.
Sean.
